Super Yacht Crewing Course 2018

I have just completed the first week of the course and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

The highlight for me was going out in a Waka. Who knew it could be such amazing fun! We were taken out by Waka Abel Tasman. They were fantastic, teaching us how to paddle, do salutes and giving a ton of local history. I had the fastest induction into Maori language ever!

Once we got the hang of things we could talk as we rowed, so it’s actually very sociable, too.

We left from Kaiteretere, went as far as Adele Island, before returning, worn out but happy. Best fun I’ve had in ages. Totally recommend it. And, happily, my back was great.

All in all, a great team building day.

The last couple of days have been fire fighting training. It’s really a refresher for me, having done a fair bit with the Navy. I was a little apprehensive about how my back would go carrying 20kgs. But it actually coped very well with the BA gear and I remembered most of what I’d learned 15 years plus ago!

This photo is courtesy of team 2, as my team were too busy with our exercise to take pics. Possibly coz one member of the team took 5 minutes to kit up. The rest of us are done between 2 and 3 minutes. Rather annoying since she was just gas bagging. Wasted valuable oxygen.

We got the job done, but it could’ve been a lot better. One guy dislocated a finger, something I can empathise only too well with.

I’ve had my moments, as those who know me well can imagine, of biting my tongue as the 18 to 22 year olds use their cell phones in class, don’t listen, rely on others to catch them up, feed them coz they forgot lunch….. Do they not think there might not be a cafe to be had out on the water?!

No doubt time will cure it but my patience is getting a work out!

Time out on NMIT campus. Not a bad place to be for the Summer.
